    Filipina for one year

Dear Philippines, where should I start? It’s been a rough and bumpy year for the two of us. A whole lot of new experiences, heat, realizations about this world, cockroaches, rice, conversations and bliss. When I tell people I went to live in the Philippines for one year, they associate dreamy beaches, nice weather and colorful fruit – holiday mainly: Then they sigh and say: lucky you! An it’s true, I am very lucky. Not only because I got to see those paradise like places, but because of so much more you have to offer. What most people cannot imagine though, is that most of the time I spent with…

    Palawan dreaming

They say: best leave on a high note. Every good thing is coming to an end at some point and so was our trip. Even though we were in the middle of experiencing all this craziness every day we were aware that it was unreal. Too nerve-jangling to go on forever, too overwhelming to still show appreciation to all the acquaintances, hidden gems and wonders of nature, after all these weeks. Nevertheless we saved the best for last. What a finale. PUERTO PRINCESSA Arrived in Puerto Princessa we met a girl, we instantly started to call Moana, who would host us in her 10m^2 bed room for the night. Moana…

    Enjoy Cebu

I just realized how little remembrances such as photos/memos/notes I have from Cebu compared to other places I went. It might sound super off-hook, but Cebu to me was just another paradise with loads of tourists on the way as it is together with El Nido the main destination. When you spend a lot of time in a country that’s got dreamy beaches, hidden waterfalls and palm forests around every corner basically, places like that drive you crazy kind of. On the other hand: have you actually been to the Philippines with out visiting Kawasan Falls, the one and only instagram spot? I somehow regret I did haha. Don’t get…

    (Apo) island life

Welcome to Apo Island, one of THE diving paradises and what I didn’t know: the only sustainable place the Philippines have to offer. Apo Island is located just off the southern tip of Negros. Even though it’s not too far off Apo Island feels like a different planet compared to the busy university town of Dumaguete. Before we started out trip Apo Island was on my list of place I would LOVE to see but because of the popularity of its dive sites and size (around 900 people live on that island) I considered it a somewhat exclusive destination. Too exclusive for our backpacker budget. But I was wrong. The…

    Hitchhiking in enchanted Siquijor

One surreal day with accidentally just 70 pesos (1,50$) for the two of us. Spent on the empty roads of Siquijor, a dreamlike island that is said to be the origin of black magic. We hitchhiked in a police car, a so-called moving van, treated ourselves at an organic fish spa underneath a magical tree and last but not least visited one of the famous healers of Siquijor. Hohol in Bohol

Next stop was the green island of Bohol. People visit Bohol for two reasons: the Chocolate Hills and the tarsiers. It is possible to rush through these two highlights and relax at a dreamy beach in Panglao at the same day. The island has everything a tourist could ask for. But I love Bohol for a lot more than that. Bohol to me is a unique place that values the greatness of nature that was given to them. A place that is efficient and considerate. Visiting Bohol is witnessing one of the wonders of this world. It is driving an overcrowded local bus standing on a sack of rice (a…

    Luzon wonderland

They are said to be the 8th world wonder: the rice terraces of Batad. No question I had to go and see this beauty / compare to the other world class rice fields I visited in Bali and Flores, Indonesia. I looked up the north bound bus terminal in Manila and we actually made it there after 3 jeepney rides through this insane city. When we arrived at 8 they told us all tickets are sold out and the line for “stand-by” passengers almost reached the street already. The thing is, there’s no other way to go to the Baguio area during the day and the night busses are always…

    Stop-over in Manila

I only took two photos in Manila. One of the sunrise at 5 am through the uber window when we arrived and the other one 24 hours later at the bus terminal that was supposed to send us to the other end of Luzon. All the snapshots, recordings and impressions in between are captured and saved in my memory. Rather etched in my mind. Sorted to the category of “crazy-stuff,-don’t-ever-forget”. I had heard a lot about Manila. I was confused, scared but mostly excited to find out the truth. Every Filipino I know has warned me to go to Manila. As soon as they realized I would go anyway, they…

Let’s celebrate the sweetest mangos in the world!

It feels good to be back after all this time traveling. At least this is what I thought all morning on the way from Puerto Princesa to my small but mighty town in the Iloilo province. Completely exhausted like it’s usual these summer days, I arrived and opened the faucet to find: nothing, it figures! Oh well, at least nothing has changed ever since I left haha. But no worries because I am just in time for the Manggahan 2017, an annual fiesta that is held in Guimaras, the island that is said to have the sweetest mangoes in the world and by coincidence only a 10-minutes boat ride away…

    Guimaras getaway

Our green paradise just a 10 minutes boat ride away. Guimaras really is the kind of escape you need once in a while. There is almost nothing there except untouched nature. This comparatively small island is the main mango producer in the Philippines. Filipinos and foreigners agree that they have the sweetest mangoes of the world here. Reportedly they are served in The White House and Buckingham Palace. 😛 I’m a huge fan but it is not season yet so they are quite expensive atm… I couldn’t resist to try the famous mango pizza though. 🙂 In May they will have the Manggahan Festival to celebrate their mangos. Among others…
