The island has always been a crucible of cultures. Whether it was the Chinese, the Arabs, the French or the Indian, everybody brought their religion as part of their culture with them. This is why today, we walk along a street of Saint-Denis for example and come by a church, a Tamil temple and maybe hear the Koran from the tower of the next mosque. There hasn’t been one religious war in the history of La Réunion. The amount of tolerance and value the creoles met with for centuries and do today, is exemplary for the rest of the world.
